While 285bhp may be correct, a couple of things have occured with the engine by 1974. First, in 1972, the engines were rated by net horsepower instead of brake horsepower (bhp). The difference is where the horsepower measurement was taken. For brake horsepower, the measurement was taken at the torque converter. For net horsepower, it was after the transmission. So brake horsepwer was a measurement of engine horsepower alone, while net horsepower was more of a true measurement of how much got to the rear wheels. Secondly, by 1974, the compression ratio was lowered to meet exhaust standards set by the government, so that also decreased horsepower. So a 1974 351W had more like 180 or so net horsepower stock. And torque for the stock engine will be somewhere in the low 200s. This is not to say that the engine is a dud. Stock form, well kinda is. But the potential for the engine, given the right combo of cam, pistons, etc. and it would be a real hellcat. And as far as weight is concerned, since the '64 is still one of the smaller Fairlanes, with the 351W it should go in the 3000 pound range give or take. You have potential there. That kind of engine/body combo would be a killer car. GO FOR IT!

The difference between Gross HP and Net HP ratings arent because they were taken with or without transmission. Gross Ratings were measured with no belt driven accessories, no air cleaner and free flowing exhaust . Net ratings are taken with water pum , fan , alternator , thermostatic air cleaner and exhaust manifolds and ehaust mufflers. So the switch from Gross HP to Net HP simply means SAE rating in 72 required the engines to run belt driven accessories and other equipment that were on the engine in factory form. 74 351 w did have a lower compression then 69-71 engines. But a open air cleaner, electric fan and headser with free flowing mufflers will take a Net rated engine close the the Gross rated performance of pre 72 engines. Lower compression does cost power and performance but not nearly as much as many . It does claim . Lower compression does have its benefits as well. One just has to understand its effects . It alters a engines power band significantly in stock tune . A distributor recurve, shange of cam specs and timing settings along with the ability to breathe easier will definitely increase the performance over stock timing and tune on a post 72 Engine

they did not make the windsor engine in 1974, if i recall correctly. What you should have is the 351M(modified), which is actually a 400 cubic inch engine. Horsepower was around 200.
