this question relations to book 5, When Corneilus Fudge and Professor Umbridge were trying to keep Harry from telling the truth about Voldemort and doing all those horrible thing to Harry, Dumbledore and Hogwarts in general, do you think they were acting on their own free will, or were they under the Imperius Curse?

free will: they just plain didn't believe harry nor dumbledore at all. and they wanted to "squash" harry's reputation to make the Ministry look like they had things under control, and that harry was the "crazy" one.

i think an underlying theme JK harps on a lot is that even people supposedly on the "Good" side could do evil things in order to do what they "think" is right.. look at Barty Crouch Sr, who sentenced his son because he made him look bad. or Fudge who tried to cover everything up, and ended up having to constantly warn the Prime MInister in Book 6 that things were getting worse and worse...... just like stereotypical politicians, who may or not lie/cheat in order to get people to vote for them, etc.

They are definately acting on their own free will. I believe that they were doing it for, in their view, the community's best interest. They probably thought that if this got out and it was even a tiny rumour the Wizarding World would have panicked. That's why, they tried so hard to discipline Harry and keep freedoms at Hogwarts as limited as possible. However, once it did get out, I believe that the community has handled as best as possible though.
The best way to tell is to wait to see the movie to see if there are any hints of the imperius curse in it because JK has never been shy about telling the director what to include in the movie.

Cornelius Fudge was never considered appropriate for the post of Minister for Magic. As a matter of fact, it was Dumbledore who was offered the job first.

Anyway, after Book 4 the ministry and the magical world at large were living in plain denial of voldemort's return. in my opinion, they were acting of their own free will, and not under the influence of the imperius curse.

i agree w/ bling he was never supposed to get the job....but then if Dumbledore took the minister job who would lead HOgwarts....as for Umbridge she is just an evil toad...no imperius curse could have made her that way....evil is not born it is created as is hatred and right now im hating Umbridge, and Fudge....and sadly JK for keeping me waiting for like ever! i mean i finished Half-Blood Prince in the car THE NIGHT IT CAME OUT!

Yup, all their own free will. Fudge was just an incompetent fool who just wanted people to like him so he succumbed to the will of others, ie Lucius.

And Umbridge was just a cow. Plain and simple. She got perverse pleasure out of making Harry suffer. Those scenes where the words where being cut into his hand were so horrible to read, i could feel my skin ripping as i read.
