Dasara is an attempt at political correctness at yahoo answers.

Like, you seem to be the only person who ever asked a question here.

Mind you it is Dusshehra ( Prounced THe-ShE-h- Ra
(TH as in then,
e as in yes,
E as in deck
A as in arm)

And Dasara is not the same as navratri, FOR simple reason that Navratri are the nine nights ( Nav= nine, ratri = night) leading upto Dushehra ( Dush = tenth), which is the tenth day.

Dasara, also called "Navaratri", is among the most important festivals celebrated in India. It's significance is right up there with the other biggies: Diwali Fesival of Lights (New Year in November) and Holi Celebrations (in April, where colored powder and dye is thrown at each other to celebrate the arrival of Spring).

I know that here in the U.S., Navaratri is marked by going to the temple for prayer and having huge garba celebrations (where you dance in big groups with special sticks called "dandiyas" while wearing elaborate Indian dresses. And there are tons of sweets to eat!

Here are some really good pictures to illustrate of Navratri in New Jersey:

Dushera is right pronunciation for this word where "Dus" means 10.Lord Rama in Hindu mythology was asked to abandon his home for 14 years by her step mother as she wanted to see her son Bharat on the throne.Lord Rama's wife and his half brother Laxman joined Lord Rama and during their stay in the jungles in southern part of India, the Lanka king Ravana disguised in the clad of a saint abducted Lord Rama's wife Sita and forced her to surrender and marry him.Lord Rama with the help of his army fought a 10 days long battle with Lankan king Ravana devastating his whole kingdom and releasing his wife from Ravana's custody. This 10 days battle and the victory over the evil is celebrated as Dushera in India and other parts of world where Hindus are settled.
