I know there are some cards that will display TV broadcasts on a computer. I don't know what they are called. Where can I find them and is there software that can record the signal to a hard disk like a Tivo? I want to be able to record shows from my cable onto a disk and then watch them later. What's the cheapest way to do this? I'd like to avoid paying Tivo $20 per month. Everybody wants $20 to $50 a month for something and pretty soon it adds up to a lot of money.

Hauppauge http://www.hauppauge.com/ has the most popular cards. You still need an antenna or cable service.

I have DirecTV satellite and they really don't want you receiving their signal and recording it raw. So for me that means using a IR transmitter and controlling a receiver box (like for a TV) and then capturing that.

Yes, you can.
Checkout offerings from Pinnacle, ADS, and others.
Or you can buy a Digital entertainment center - a high-end PC with a Tuner
