I don't want to do any cheers here, but will give you my view concerning whether cheerleading is a sport or not.
I am a former player, coach, and professional baseball scout so know my sports, but I am also the father of three former high school cheerleaders. I saw up close and personal just how hard those people on the cheerleading squads work.
It is without a doubt a sport, since it requires a TON of conditioning and practice! I dare say that the people involved in cheerleading (at least if they do it in the traditional manner of doing stunts and routines) work every bit as hard or even harder than most athletes in most other sports with few exceptions - I know they work as hard as I ever did.
Now I know that there will be some people out there who think I'm nuts and will say things like, "Cheerleaders are wimps who don't run up and down the field and get hit," or "Cheerleaders don't do anything but prance around and act cute as they follow a planned routine, so it isn't really a sport," etc.
My only response to these people is that they should try jumping up and down, tumbling, and trying to get the crowd excited when your team is losing, the weather is freezing, and you've got a sore leg! Or imagine yourself being on top of a pyramid, have someone below lose her balance, and cause you start to fall - only the girl below you forgets to let go of your legs! That unfortunately happened to my eldest daughter when she was a freshman cheerleader for her school.
Needless to say, we spent the rest of the game and a couple extra hours in the emergency ward getting her broken forearm put in a cast. Therefore, I guess when it comes to deciding whether or not cheerleading is a legitimate sport, I think that personally I'd rather try to hit a 90 MPH fastball or dodge an approaching linebacker any day.....

Well for all you people who think cheer leading is a sport here is what I have to say .........yes it is. I 'll bet you thought I was going to say something else. It takes alot of training, endurance, and flexibility to do what a cheerleader does.. A very talented soccer player was doing both sports last year and she decided not to play soccer this year due to the commitment that is involved with cheer leading. I thought being the macho verile man that I am that man she is stupid and then I got to thinking using the other side of my brain you are giving up soccer that you are so good at that comes so easily for you for cheerleading wow that takes committment that I do not have or would even come close to having.., My hats off to the cheerleaders.

No - it isn't a sport because a winner is determined by qualitative decisions...not quantitative. I know that it is physical and it takes stamina and all that, but that is not what makes something a sport. Sports can be played without judges determining the winners. For example, me and my buddies can go out and play some Basketball...we can determine a winner based on which team scores the most baskets. We cannot however go out and cheer and determine a winner. We can both argue all night and day saying that we were better...in order to figure out who won...we would need a judge!
Finally....you PLAY sports. You PLAY basketball...you PLAY football...you PLAY golf...you PLAY hockey....you get it? You don't PLAY cheerleading!
