why cant i watch movies in avi format on my windows media player, i have the most current version, and its supposed to download codecs automaticlly.

To run files in avi format at your favorite windows media player, you need to download a very small plugin and install it.

Its the Windows Media Codec which you can find at the official website of Microsoft Inc.

If you really want to watch it, download Media Player Classic. I have never had a video that that didn't have a codec for.
