I have traditionally avoided businesses that open on Xmas bc, employees shouldn't have to work that day. However, my gf says employees like to work that day bc of the holiday pay.

No. The employee has to be there regardless. For instance, I am working Christmas Day. Even if I never see a customer today, then I still have to be here. It is company policy to be open 365 days a year, so we will be open no matter what.

If anything, I prefer having customers come in because it gives me someone to talk to.

Plus, the double time doesn't hurt either!

There are some businesses, gas stations, grocery stores and convience stores that are open and require their employees to come in, but there are others that leave it up to the employee to decide if they would like to work that day or not. I would recommend that you take a moment to visit with employees a week or so before Christmas and find out which that business abides by and then decide based on their answers. You may be surprised that alot of them choose to work that shift for the extra money.

Thats a really great question.

The only store in my area that is open today is 7-11, and the employees are all Sikh's so Christmas is pretty much just another day for them...

If you think about it, a large number of people in the US celebrate xmas strictly as a secular holiday, so working those days has no religious connotation to it at all...

In that sense, they're all just earning bonus cash on a day that is otherwise just another day.

And I've actually volunteered to work on Christmas, as I'm not overly fond of the holiday, and its commercialization (and that based on the Bible, Jesus was actually born in spring...)

Of course there are also Christian sects who frown on Christmas and its celebration...

So frankly, unless an employer is forcing someone to work on Christmas, and all those who do work choose to do so, I see now problem with it...

Just my .01

Some ppl do want to work on Christmas because of the holiday pay. My uncle works as an Officer in a Jail and always works holidays because he gets extra money. He schedules holiday time around his job. I think its more important to stay at home with his family, but I guess he wants/needs the money. Same with ppl who at stores on the holidays, some have to work because they may be a manager or boss of the place and noone else wants to work. OR, they might not celebrate Christmas and not care if they have to work that day.

I wouldnt go out of my way to avoid shopping at places that are open on Xmas because since I work retail, I know how it feels when noone comes in your store and you sit there all day with noone to talk to /nothing to do! So visit their store and talk and buy stuff and it will make their day brighter!

No it does not hurt the employees. When you accept a job, you know what is expected and the hours, days they operate. Anyone who works retail knows they will work many holidays. Also keep in mind that not everyone has the same beliefs-some people do not celebrate Christmas. Maybe to them its no big deal and they might even be getting paid extra.

Some places do not offer holiday pay. One guy i worked for once said my holiday money was having a job at all, places like restaurants and fast food places pay almost nothing to start with, perhaps hospitals pay time and 1/2 but it all depends on who the employer is. I believe your premise is correct and your gf is rationalizing

I would like to ask the people who are don't celebrate Christmas if they would be happy receiving less holiday pay then Christians receive?????

Back in the day, no stores were opened on Holidays. Heck, I am so old I can remember when no stores were open on Sundays--now that is old.

We all planned ahead and bought what we needed. If you forgot something, you borrowed from a neighbor or just lived without it. My friend is a manager of a conveience store. She hates being open on the holidays as do her employees.

About the running out of gas on the holidays, most gas stations you can still pump gas if you put it on a debit or credit card--no clerk has to be there.

why would it hurt them...i only hurts them if they have to work a full day without anyone coming into the store...imagine working for 8 hours with no customers...i would go crazy...they wouldn't work if they didn't want to...how would you feel if you ran out of gas on christmas and all the gas stations were closed???

business is all about meeting the bottomline...providing goods and services even on holidays...plus remember not everyone celebrates Christmas...so to them it's just another day!!!

No, it helps the employees who need the money and have chosen to work those hours. If no one shops then they will be sent home and loose the pay.

No, but also keep in mind that all places do not do holiday pay. I've heard that casinos don't always, and make people work if it is their regular shift.
