My daughter is an honor student with two part-time jobs. She balances her jobs to about 20 hrs per week each. One is as a waitress..... works hard on her feet. It pays a lot more.

The other is the federal work-study program. She has a cushy job at the academic computer lab on campus. She signs students in and out and monitors them while they take online exams. Most of the time, she is not very busy and has a lot of time to do her own homework and studying. She does very little at home because she is able to do so much on that job.... and get paid for it!

If you qualify for work study.... try to find a job that allows you to study. Some do and some don't. That will help.

A lot of people work their way through school. It means less partying, being a serious student, and sticking to a schedule to get everything done. No one says it's easy, but people have done it for generations.

Best Wishes,

Sue

I worked through college, sometimes full time. I wouldn't change it for a thing. I have no student loans and even bought my own car while in college (ok, my parents did help a little) My grades were just fine. I got job experience (unfortunantly nothing in my major) The people not working weren't really productive with their extra free time, and I feel like I got good work ethic out of it. I still had plenty of free time and volunteered and was involved with campus groups. College is less structured than high school so there is less actual class time.

Going to school while working can have both pros and cons like anything else. Furthering yourself in education can better help you in getting a better career which can lead you into making more money. However, going to school will cut down on your free time and it can be hard if you have a family. I work full time and go to school full time (done this coming May) and intend to go on and do my Masters. I also have a husband and a 11 month old. I believe one can do anything he/she wants as long as you put your mind to it and if you can juggle it, then go for it (working and school). My feeling is you can't place a price on education.

The first two posters mention the most obvious pros and cons about working while studying.

Some students are lucky enough to get career-related jobs while in college. This is excellent on-the-job training, looks good on a resumé, and may even lead to a permanent job.

-personally it gets you better grades cuz you NEED to manage time rather than putting studying off.
