No.

Boxing Day originated in the UK. Gifts were traditionally given in boxes, and the day after christmas, the stoes would be busy with people returning boxes of gifts. Over the years, it simply came to be realized that peolple seemed to need an extra day (at least), hence Boxing Day.

It's recognized in some countries that were part of the old British Empire and in some that are members of the current Commonwealth, but the US was never a part of either. A colony, yes, but never part of the Empire. That came later.

We don't have Boxing Day, but we have the "50-75% off all Christmas Items" day and the "Hurry and return it quick before they run out of things" day. These are both the day after Christmas where shopping as just as bad as it was before Christmas.

No. Its a vestige of Colonial days when the hired help got the leftovers from the gentry. In America the classes were less defined and still are to this day despite the depairity between rich and poor.

They have it - it's the day after Christmas, after all.

They just don't get a holiday for it!

And we're losing the holiday here in New Zealand - 1st news item was the massive turn-out for "Boxing Day Sales", plus returns/trade-ins!

No

They don't even know what it is or understand it.

It's sort of mixed in with Christmas. People who have regular Post people or housekeepers usually give them Christmas Gifts or Bonuses.

People who support charities give all year round.
