Well, I've wanted to be a director for some time now, and was just wondering what steps I should take to become one. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Are we talking film or theatre here? It makes a difference.

If you want to direct for the stage, you need to do a couple of things:

1) study ALL theatrical design elements (lights, sound, scenic, costume, etc.); a good director has to have enough vocabulary in these areas to interact productively with the designers he/she uses.

2) ACT in some scenes/shows. Without exception, the best directors I've worked with had at least a bit of acting experience. Until you truly KNOW what it is that actors do, you won't know how to communicate with them in a manner which enables everyone to feel good about the process and the result.

Most actors become directors not the other way around. They have plenty of performing art schools out there. Concentrate also on media editting, and any classes on literature and phlosophy as well.

If you're in high school, take classes that involve film and film productions. Also get involved in drama so you know what makes acting best and how to bring that out.

Audition for local theatre productions so you understand what an actor goes through. For college go to UCLA.
