i dont want any that need downloading.
none with like dragons and stuff like that...
are there any you know and like?

I'd suggest The Elder Scrolls series, but that's in the fantasy genre. I think you'll find most RPGs are heavily influenced by High Fantasy and will have dragons and elves and such.
For non-elf RPGs you could try Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines or Vampire: The Masquerade - Redemption. Both are pretty decent RPGs.
Then of course there's the Fallout series, both of which are excellent and set in an apocolyptic future rather than in a fantasy realm. They'll be difficult to find though so you'll have to do some searching. There should be a third in the series coming out within the next year or so, though the developer is different so I'm not sure it will be as good as the first two.
There's also Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth. It's not much of a stat based RPG, more like an action adventure game instead, but it's story/character driven rather than combat and quest driven.

I think that a great role playing game is Diablo II, it has an engaging story, beautiful graphics and lots of action. Some character management is necessary but it does not hamper gameplay at all. Overall a great game to play
