I would say a grey, black, or possibly tartan wool skirt. Nice stockings, maybe even very warm tights, if a black skirt I would wear grey tights and if a grey skirt then black or pink tights. White or pink v neck sweater with a cross or solitare diamond necklace. Makeup must be done well, Department store makeup counters or a Mary Kay Lady can be helpful here. A navy Pea Coat could be nice to keep warm. Or a wool business type jacket to match your skirt might be nice. Your hair needs to be styled and possibly curled gently. A nice manicure is mandatory, French manicure would be nice, but nothing too flashy like red 2 inch nails. I am a guy and a crossdresser And would love to be in your shoes. Which should be some what snow worthy, Perhaps a leather boot with a 2 inch heel or so.

Well, I am a girl who lives on the east coast and goes to a private school, so I think I can answer your hypothetical question.
The best thing is to not go too far out of your normal range of clothing and how you act- it is easy to tell on anyone when someone is being fake. If you get in, after visiting, you can see how they dress and act and change your wardrobe accordingly.
This year there hasn't really been any winter, or at least arounding D.C., so while you shouldn't be packing mini skirts, you don't need to be preparing for snow- it's around 50/40 degrees.
For your makeup, it should be very natural/not overboard- some lip gloss, mascara, eyeliner, maybe a bit of blush or eyeshadow if you want to be daring, but you want to look natural, almost as if you're not wearing makeup- if you do you will most likely look slutty and out of place. Plus, its always better to have too little makeup than too much.
For your face, you want it to be clear, although this year my skin has been drier than usual, so bring some sort of moisturizer just in case.
For your hair, you want it to be very neat- so have it brushed (not wild and flyaway), or put it into a low ponytail or a braid.
As for your outfit, despite what people say, no one is really wearing mini skirts with tights, and leggings have gone out a long time ago, so just go with a nice pair of cords or jeans- if you can fford it True Religion or Citizens or Rock&Republic- Marc Jacobs or another type of jean would be nice but a bit more pricey. And there is always JCrew- it seems a bit conservative, but people have been wearing it since I came in 6th grade. The jeans shouldn't be tight or baggy- more fitted. Your shirt should also be fitted- no tight or showing too much cleavage. And for god's sake, no abercrombie or any of those stores. They scream "slutty public school bimbo". If you want to dress as a slut, fine. The guys might think that you're hot, but also a slut, and the girls will think that you are a slut and talk and gossip about you begind your back, and if you go to that school, you will always be labeled as a slut. Instead, wear a nice fitted plain shirt or a cashmere sweater- JCrew has many of them. Or you can go to a store like Saks or Neiman Marcus, if you can afford them of course, and ask a saleslady for help. Of course, if this is too expnsive, then just go in whatever you usualy wear- its pitifully obvious when someone's lacoste polo is cheap or bought in a thrift store.
Just be nice and cordial to everyone- the point here is to make a neutral impression so that when you come back in the fall you can impress them however you want, after you have the feel of the place. If you're going there expecting everyone to fall at your feet and remember you, you are sadly mistaken. And don't lie about anything either- just be honest or say something neutral.
good luck

Stick to simple. Styles are different everywhere, so don't try anything that could be seen as different to make you stand out more. Try a simple pendant necklace, and stud earrings. Maybe a black skirt and flats with a sweater in a color that looks good on you. I think light pink looks good on almost anyone and boys seem to like it because it's feminine. Good luck.

Just wear that they are wearing in the East Coast,a lot of good resources are the videos you see on t.v. The big puffy coats with the faux fur collars seem to be in and the army fatigues.Vans are in but I don't know on which coast,I will assume on both. The retro look is in too.

Go with Lyric Culture ... t-shirts with song lyrics on them (and jeans will be available soon). They have an online store and will be at Saks very soon too.
