Today i just met my dad's friend and he owns a company that spreaded through korea, japan, canada and the US. He also owns several factories and has many properties around the world. He started from the garage by experimenting with different chemicals and producing a product that cleans stains without scrubbing. He has been selling his product to hundreds of school districts and even UCLA. After hearing about how successful he is, this tells me that i have to invent a product in order to become filthy rich like him? His sons are managing a factory in canada and his daughter is managing the accounting for him. This makes me feel down because my parents are not wealthy, I have nowhere to start out from, i have no experience in business, i basicallly have no experience in anything. I am just a freshmen at UCR studying environmental engineering. I am scared that my life won't go anywhere with my major but i really want to help improve the environment. :(

First of all, you should understand that over 80% of the millionaires in America are First-Generation millionaires. That means they didn't inherit a ton of money from a rich uncle or anything like that. They went out and achieved their dreams. Read the book titled "The Millionaire Next Door". These people just live different than we think they do.

You can easily be a multi-millionaire in your life time by driving an older used car instead of buying a new cars. Invest the money you would have spent on a car payment in to a good Mutual Fund, it will pile up faster than you think. The real trick is to live on much less than you make, and to make smart long-term decisions with your extra money.

I challenge that environmental engineering has a bad future. Did you know that Wind and Solar power have make huge advances in the last several years. Wind power is now competitively priced with coal and natural gas, and more advances are coming. There are many challenges and opportunities around this because we have an existing fossil fuel infrastructure which needs to be transitioned in to a hydrogen and electric infrastructure. I think your future is bright! Keep a positive attitude, and work toward helping others to make these important transitions..and yes it's a good thing for you to make a few bucks in this process too.

If your main concern is to help improve the environment, then go ahead and work towards that. Money is really important sadly, but I don't think people should base their career only on what job would make the most money. You may end up being able to make a lot of money with your degree in environmental engineering. I'm an English major even though I know that it's hard to make money from that. It's what I enjoy though, and it's important to major in what you love because then you're more motivated to do the work and do well. A lot of people don't even end up in the same field as they majored in. What's important is to have a degree. I don't know, I'm a freshman too, but that's what I think.

Get the most out of your education that you can.

Find a job that you don't mind working hard at.

Spend less money than you earn.

Save all that you can & invest in sound investments.

Compound interest adds up over the years & an average person
could end up being a Millionaire.

Don't limit yourself to invention, real estate, etc. if you want to get rich. Just do something you really enjoy and LIVE ON LESS THAN YOU EARN. Take the difference you save and invest it and never spend it. I did it as a teacher and am now worth millions. If you enjoy environmental engineering, stay with it and follow your heart. Good luck.

They come seeking opportunity not hand outs, they dont expect freebies, they work like dogs and make every sacrifice in order to achieve success all without whining. Americans can be as successful if we were willing to make the sacrifices, work the hours and get into the careers that return financially and of course took education seriously.
