I don't have a laptop, but if it works similar to a desktop, why not try going to the Control Panel, System, and look for the Device Manager. Here, right-cl on the drive and select Properties. Hopefully, this will tell you if it is working properly -- or not.

well, it's better that you don't take out optical drive to clean it on your own, what i use is a dvd cd lens cleaner cd (it's available on any departmental store or in case you don't find it try shop where they sell dvd or cd movies) and yes a solution to apply on your cleaning cd, (alcohol will do) but it will be better if you can have a solution from the store. and regarding opening of the tray , if you look closely you will find a tiny hole or orifice any where near the eject button of your rom , so just press the eject key and simultaneously insert a needle or pin into that orifice your tray will open up. but do not insert or push the pin too hard this may ruin your rom ejecting mechanism.

Maybe your DVD Rom is messed up/broken/damaged because as you say it displays in your computer. It is easier and cheaper to replace the dvd rom (cost around $45.00) instead of going to someone for getting it fixed.

Try blowing it out with a can of compressed air.
