You have all the same options as a desktop. Your Internet service can be any of the available options that you have at that location. Cable, DSL, dial-up, etc.

In general the "best" way to connect is the fastest way you can afford. For many that way is DSL, but some cable TV companies how offer bundle deals that make it cheap to a get-faster-than- average cable Internet service.

Beyond that... a wired network is the fastest if you have cable or DSL. It's also the most secure.

For convenience you can also you a wireless network connection if that's an option in your town. That is more expensive, but it's cool that you can take it anywhere the service has coverage (like a mobile phone).

It depends. Direct ethernet connection is the best in terms of speed, but you are limited to the area where the ethernet port is available.

With wireless internet connection, you can use your internet anywhere around the house, but speed is sacrificed a bit and also you have to make sure that there are no obstacles in between the router and wireless internet adapter in your laptop. The equipment that you choose to purchase is important too.

Linksys is a trusted brand as well as Netgear.

Cable internet is the best in my opinion.
