Every sport has a playoffs to determine who is the best except golf (used only when necessary). The playoffs is the "tournament" where the "best team" is determined. Only the elite teams make the playoffs and to clinch means that before the playoffs arrive or the regular season ends, that particular team knows they will be going to the playoffs no matter what hence the term to clinch (grasp, get a hold of, grab onto, etc.).
