E-bay and Amazon.com are reliable corporations.

Buyer Beware! Individuals that sell on E-bay are not always reputable.

A friend bought a car on E-bay and it was a great deal, no problems with the transaction.

You pay your money, you take your chance.

If you have a problem with an E-bay transaction, contact E-bay immediately.

It's the same story as everywhere else - "buyer beware".

Both ebay and Amazon are large sites that have been around for a long time in terms of the internet. They are however quite different in nature - Amazon is primarily a store where you purchase stuff directly from them; Ebay is a host and facilitator for online auctions - sellers offer their wares for sale on Ebay and buyers make bids, the final purchase price is paid directly to the seller via a variety of methods. Ebay would of course prefer people to use PayPal, which Ebay owns, but sellers can also elect to offer direct credit card, electronic funds transfer ("direct deposit") or cheque/money order.

Amazon, being a large store with a reasonable reputation, should be as reliable as any major department store - with the impersonal service to match. Ebay on the other hand depends very much on the seller you are considering buying from - while Ebay does offer some regulation, there are still dodgy dealers around and people do get ripped off when inadequate precautions are taken. The key to Ebay is to look at feedback ratings (their reputation), the type and range of items that the seller is offering or has offered in the past, and to use the safest available payment option.

Personally I have had very good experiences buying from major online stores in Australia (Amazon doesn't sell here yet). Online stores like chaos and sanity for cd's, auspcmarket for computer stuff and others I have used have offered good prompt service and generally competitive prices.

This is one of those late night after dinner subjects and I guess it comes down to personal experience.

I have used both sites twice recently and I got what i paid for and it was as I expected it to be.

People I know havent been so fortunate and did loose some money on EBAY.

Despite all the checks and balances supposedlly put in place essentially these sites rely on ppls honesty and trust to work.

Essentially they started out to build acommunity of traders who would grow through common ethics and values in the way that transactions were managed.

Unfortunatley these sites also attract thieves and liars who have purposely set out to defraud and rob people of goods or money.

Despite all the threats and promises regarding site safety neither EBAY or Amazon have a particulaly strong track record in succesfull prosicutions , so i leave it up to you what you think.

From my point of view , I have a special credit card account with a small amount of funds in , it is not connected to my major accounts so I can safetly use it on-line . If I get stung then they will only take a small amount of money and not all of it.

I can't speak for eBay, but I've been buying a lot of used books from Amazon. Just be sure to pay through Amazon, not an individual. So far all I have gotten were good deals and books were in good condition.

I've been using Ebay for years and I only paid for one item, that I never received and it was only $7. I could have protested and probably got my money back, but I didn't feel like it. Most sites are trustworthy. Internet buying has become familar in our lifestyle and companies don't last if they are a rip off.

If you buy stuff from amazon, make sure you buy only from major retailers or Amazon because their buyer protection is worthless. As far as eBay is concerned, I would say about 80%of retailers are trustable based on their feedback ratings

Had some e-bay that was bad but most are good. Pay with a discover card via pay-pal. If the seller takes your money and runs, discover card will cover it if you file with pay-pal. If item bought from e-bay was crap AND was not as advertized, you can file complaint. Keep your cookies private and you shouldn't have much problems.

I'd definitely look at the feed back ... I know someone who sells stuff and if they think they'll get bad feedback they sell under a different name from usual, bugged me to no end when I heard that ... so definitely "buyer beware"!!!
