This depends on what you intend to do with this drive. I am assuming this drive connects via USB hence is plug and play allowing you to take it to work/other locations.
If you plan to just keep this hard drive at home and want it as a backup/more storage space, I suggest you avoid keeping interactive programs/games on it that you intend to play a lot. This is because regardless of how fast the external drive is, it will not be as fast as your internal drives. And when you run large applications, it is better to have a faster data transfer from RAM to Hard drive. However, smaller files such as music should be fine. If you lack space on your internal hard drive to install games, you can move some of the files onto the external drive and install the games on the internal.
Had the drive been used as a travel drive where you take it to work, etc, I guess it would be the only way to transfer the large files from one place to the other. However depending on your configuration of the external drive, it might not work with the operating system installed on the internal drive of the computers other than the one that you normally work on. I personally have not tried throwing too much games / applications onto mine (as it mainly serves as a backup), therefore I cannot give you much disadvantages / advantages towards doing so.
Hope it helps.

Better to use external drive as a storage device. Have your programs in the primary drive. I can give you a link that deals with hard drive problems. Some drive problems can be easily fixed by yourself using easily available tools. I found the info at http://fixit.in useful. Try this site, if you can get what is required.

You can... but I prefer to avoid that kindof stuff. When you install any program or game, it does not just copy to the program directory, but installs shared system files, shortcuts, and all sorts of registry entries. It can be troublesome if the drives is moved, and external are less reliable, and slower, than internal.
Generally, I recommend installing stuff onto an internal drive, and saving the larger Media files (pics, music, video, etc.) onto the external. But if you need the installation space, you need it.

I think you will find running programs from the internal hard drive faster. Externals are good for backups and storage.
