You start by making contacts to local jam clubs in several states. Once you've gotten that down, have the legal paperwork drawn up to sign a band for you to represent. Next, you go out and find that band you think will soar big and put on your best sales pitch for them to sign up.

OK, you've done all the above and got a hot band signed up. Now, the real work begins.....

You gotta have the band cut a killer good tape of some of their work, maybe have some good PR pics made of them too. Get the fingers to do the walking and call these clubs, connect up and then send your band's PR package to them.

Be sure to put in the PR pack a reasonable list of things the club can throw in for the band as well. If they aren't well known or signed by a label, make their requests reasonable.

All this is intense work that takes a couple of weeks to line up. Once you've gotten a "tour" of clubs signed and ready, it's time to load out and hit the road.

As their manager, not only do you have to land the gigs, but on the road---you have to make sure you can deliver what the band needs as well. All ths effort gets a tad bit easier once your band is signed to a label and they crank out some profitable CD's.

First, you might want to invest in the book, "This Business of Music." It's like the Bible for positions in the music industry. It gives job descriptions for the various positions, so that you have an understanding of your responsibilities, sample contracts (make sure you have a written contract), and the going pay rates. If you don't have a contract with everything included, you can really get ripped off.

Let me tell you that this can be a tough and very tiring position. Make sure you totally research the position first.

After that, get youself some business cards and start giving the out to new bands and other music groups.
