Apple recommends the following steps to clean your iPod:
Unplug all of the iPod’s cables and cords
Set the Hold switch to Hold
Wipe the iPod with a soft, damp, lint-free cloth. Avoid getting moisture in openings
Apple also warns not to use aerosol sprays, solvents, alcohol, or abrasives to clean your iPod.
For tips on adding extra sparkle to your iPod, check out these resources:

Go to a drug store or an eye doctor and ask them if they have eye-glass cleaning wipes. These have micro-fiber texture and can clean the most sensitive of surfaces without leaving a scratch. = ) Hope i helped.

Use a soft cloth, just dampen it with a SMALL amount of PLAIN water. Make sure it isn't wet, just damp! Clean very gently, don't rub hard or press hard.
