Because how long would it take to train a pilot? How long would it take to build the hours to reach the minumum of 2500hrs? The major airlines usually require that amount of hours as minumum.

Also, what's probably the average hours a pilot has when he or she is hired for a major airline?

A few thousand hours is pretty typical -- and no, you won't find any 28-year old pilots for major airlines. You'll be lucky to be a first officer at that age, making $30-35K/year if you're lucky.

For a really good view of the life of a pilot, read Patrick Smith's "Ask The Pilot." It's a fun read, and if it doesn't discourage you from persuing a career as a pilot then you've really got aviation in your blood.

Usually around the age of 28 you will find the pilot as a first officer for a commuter airline. The commuter airlines are the first step for the pilots in the airline industry. An example of a commuter airline would be American Eagle. The airlines have the pilots gain hours and experience in the commuters and then move on the majors!

A commecial airline pilot can be trained in the military but it requires a ten year commitment. After that any airline will hire you.
