I am a Saints fan, so I am probably a little biased. However, I just want to know what the rest of you think.

Just remember this. Coach Payton took a team coming off a miserable season (3-13), in a town that had learned the meaning of the word "misery" (Katrina), and turned them into possible Superbowl contenders.

If not Coach Payton, then who and why?

It definitely won't be Parcells. He's a great coach, but he hasn't done anything THAT remarkable this year. Remember how hyped the Cowboys were before the season began? The only reason they are in playoff contention is because there are so many mediocre teams in the conference (or, I should say, teams with mediocre records). This should be considered a dissapointing year for the Cowboys in the regular season.

Jeff Fischer somehow managed to convince his team to get off their butts and start playing after they opened the season 0-5. They now have playoff hopes, albeit small. However, it is unlikely they will make the playoffs or even get anywhere if they do squeeze their way in. The playoffs usually do a number on rookie quarterbacks, no matter how good they are. Sorry Vince.

Brian Billick comes close, but:

Sean Payton gets my nod for coach of the year. Along with the obvious reasons (turning the team around after an awful showing last year), I think he deserves the award because of his innovative, gutsy playcalling in a variety of game situations (remember when their fullback scored THREE TOUCHDOWNS in a game? that's just one example among many). I think Payton beats out Billick here because Payton is working with a far inferior defense, and is playing to his team's strengths perfectly in all phases.

It's not Sean Payton, it's the team itself. Last year it was a good year, that's a given. But over 30 plus years, the team have not had a good showing overall. I am a New Orleans native and have never been a Saints fan.

Sean Payton did a great job this year, but I would vote for Eric Mangini. Simply compare rosters. This is no knock on Sean Payton at all. Would you rather have Drew Bress, Reggie Bush, Deuce McAlister, Joe Horn, Marques Colston, Devery Henderson OR Chad Pennington, Leon Washington, Cedric Houston, Laverneus Coles, Jericho Cothcery, Brad Smith?

Jeff Fischer deserves consideration as do Andy Reid and Brian Billick.

Why give it to him? Heck I would be more willing to give it to Raven's coach. He took a crappy team last year and turned it around. Fired the offensive coordinator and took over play calling and the offense is doing BETTER. Sure if the award was for the GM the Saint's deserve credit. Payton didn't find Brees though or sign him, that was the GM. It was getting a better QB that changed things around. As to the Hurricane man what does that have to do with anything. A football team isn't going to play worse because what happened to the city THE PREVIOUS YEAR.

I would definitly give it to Payton he has taken a horrible team added key players and turned them into a Superbowl contender

Runner up Brian Billick of the Ravens his team is getting no respect but they continue to dominate.

Ravens vs Saints Superbowl XLI

Id say no to payton....hes a good coach but never underestimate how little coaching needs to be done when Brees trows for 300 yards a game and Bush is taking on 3 guys a play. However id have to say Parcells, maybe that sounds ciche....however he has moved Romo and taken out a proven NFL soldi starter... and hes done a very good job controlling T.O. in a sense...started out rough but all he has done was inflict a "suicide attempt" on himself and dropped some passes.

My ballot would go like this -

1. Payton
2. Eric Mangini
3. Jeff Fisher
4. Andy Reid

Payton did amazing things for the city of New Orleans, but Mangini really got more from less than anyone in the league. At least Fisher has Vince Young. Who do the gets have? "Hanging" Chad Pennington and "Neon" Leon Washington?

i would say definitely. It not only turned around the team but gave hope to the city of New Orleans and the state of Louisiana. He brought in a lot of new talent that we desperatly needed, and he has done a great job of using that talent not just in players he knew would get the job done but also the rookie players that have turned out to be outstanding. Colston for one and of course Reggie. I think he's done a great job and hope and pray (lol) that we get to keep him
