I think it is because of fear. The world, as it is unfolding, often looks like a very scary place and to feel better most of us want something or someone to believe in that is Right. Some look shallow, some look more deeply, and once what looks Right is found, people want to hang on and use it to fend off what is scary. Not realizing that someone else might have another part of the puzzle that might actually make them more secure than they already feel, they violently reject new information as a threat to their security. No one has all the answers and we desperately need all the answers to deal with the problems mankind and the world faces. We will all prosper and have a better life for ourselves and our children when we realize that each of us has something valuable to say, even if it is only a very small piece of the truth. Fear is only a trick of the mind, and when we see that we are not in danger, but actually will benefit from listening to everyone, we will be stronger and more intelligent as individuals and as a country.

I think ego and insecurity are involved. Some people are insecure and have fragile egos, so when others don't echo their opinions or agree with them after their opinions have been stated, they take it as an affront to them personally instead of a difference of opinion. Of course some people's opinions are deeply tied to who they are, but they need to realize that everyone is different and aren't going to always agree with them. Personally, I have a close friend who is politically opposite of me. However, we have agreed to disagree. I state my opinions and she states hers. We listen to each other respectfully, ask questions, and then go on. It would be boring if everyone had the same views on everything.

for instance, take the word Civil War. how can you be civil and have war? you can't. that's how i feel about agreeing on disagreeing. You are both agreeing and disagreeing, so how can you disagree about agreeing. it's almost like an oxymoron
