they do give you points for every dollar you spend..However it's not a lot..When i had, I had to spend like $20,000 to get enough for a $20 gift card or something like that...it was a LOT ...most places here won't even take them..motels will and a lot of your travel things will but stroes won't, etc..

For disadvantages go find a user group.
(one I do know - they charge the retailer about 5% whilst most other cards charge the retailer 3 to 4% = so a lot of places refuse to take Amex).
