Abnormal? Well, I think I know what you're asking, but let's take a minute and look at the word "normal."
"conforming to a standard; usual, typical, or expected."
Now, to whose "standard" should we compare ourselves? A very religious, conservative person, or someone who understands that there is no shame in enjoying the pleasures of the flesh ~ especially one's own?
And what about "addiction?" That's a pretty negative term, isn't it? It's usually used when talking about chemical/substance abuse.
There are hardly any health risks associated with masturbation.
OK, enough etymology (history of words). Let's talk about masturbation...
I don't know your age, so I can't assume anything about you. But whether you're young or mature, there's absolutely NOTHING wrong with giving yourself pleasure as often as you like ~ as long as you're taking care of the other responsibilities in your life, such as academics, work, family, etc.
Masturbation is not just about pleasure, but learning about your body and how it works; what it likes.
If you're pleasuring yourself on a frequent basis for short periods of time, try cutting back a bit on the QUANTITY and concentrate on the QUALITY.
If you normally pleasure yourself for only 10-20 minutes at a session, try relaxing, taking it slower, and go for 45 minutes. Don't you deserve it?
Many adults who have been pleasuring themselves for decades - both married and single - enjoy taking as much as a full hour for themselves. And why not? By whose standard would that be excessive?
So basically, relax. Quit worrying.
As long as you're not doing anything dangerous to your body, enjoy yourself. Concentrate of the feelings, on taking yourself to a higher level of pleasure.
Betty Dodson says that masturbation is "erotic meditation."

When a girl (or boy) reaches the age of puberty, she/he starts experimenting with his body and masturbation is common. I have known some who masturbated twice a day when young and didnt have any problem later when they grew up. One develops other interests or pusuits when one grows up and masturbation ceases to be frequent. No norms can be laid down as to no. of times it could be done.
When masturbation becomes an obsession, or when one thinks constantly about sex, is unable to satisfy her/his urges, and resorts to masturbation when she/he is in different situations, then it is a cause for concern.

"Too often" means that your behaviour is interfering with your daily life.
To know if you're addicted, visit a 12-Step program related to this topic. There are different ones in different areas, but some are SA, SAA, SRA and SLAA.

You have a problem when you masturbate more than you want to have sex or when that is always on your mind. Do you want to do it at work, while driving or are you in a hurry to get home and take care of yourself. If so I would say that you have a problem.

I think it is normal. I believe that when you like yourself more than another human being - you are doing it to much.
