One year my sister gave me a fruitcake made by some monks - it was the way they raise $$ for their monastary. They make a certain number per year & no more. The cakes are practically flour-free. Fruit, nuts, & they are hand-made individually and soaked in brandy for 2 weeks or longer. This was one of the most memorable treats I have ever eaten - it was 10 years ago & I can still taste the rich sweetness.
So, mass produced fruitcakes with their wild colors & heavy reputation may be worthy of the seasonal mockery they recieve, but not all fruitcake is created equal.

Fruitcake is right up there with liver, lima beans and hominy. I don't eat any of them, blah.
