Actually, the main difference in the two is the type of tap you have on your shoe. In clogging you wear what is called a jingle tap which is a flat tap plate completely attached to the front bottom of your shoe and then an additional tap is attached, usually by two screws, one on either side of the flat plate, which allows the top tap to hang freely and make the jingle sound. On the other hand, tap shoes are just that. One flat tap plate completely attached to the shoe. No additional noise which is why a lot of people say that people that tap have better control over their feet...not necessarily the case. Clogging shoes have one wiggly tap hanging out on the bottom of the shoe while tap has the very controlled sound of one fully attached tap. Really, if you appreciate music and dance the way I do and the way I used to instill it in my students then your style of music doesn't much have anything to do with whether or not you are clogging or tapping. The last competition we won we clogged, dressed up in some crazy outfits, looking like the walking dead...all while we clogged to Thriller by Michael Jackson. Good Luck with your competition.

It depends on what style of clogging, just like it depends on what style of tap that you are comparing. The traditional form clogging is always done in pairs with bluegrass music (a lot of banjo!). It is very structured with the partnering, but not as much with the steps. It is neat to watch at first, but sometimes I can get bored watching since I was never trained in traditional. However, the more contemporary form, like the ones from America's Best Dance Crew, is more similar to tap. Clogging is very heavy on your feet (damaging to your knees!), and it is very high step. Your knees should either be level with your hips or higher. The steps are very intricate and sounds are very important. At clogging competitions, the judges face the audience the whole time during the A Capella category, and just listen to the sounds. Tap and clogging are both fun, but some people prefer one style over the other. Neither style is any easier or harder than the other. Also, I just wanted to point out that there are more that two styles of clogging! There are many! I fully suggest attending a clogging competition!

RE:
what is the difference between clogging and regular tap dancing?
i want to enter a dance competition but i don't know what catagory i am in. My routine is kind of a 'funky tap' routine combining hip hop, tap, and jazz. and clogging i think.

Clogging is a traditional type of percussive folk dance which is associated with a number of different regions across the world.
Originally, it was not always called "clogging", being known variously as flat-footing, foot-stomping, buck dancing, jigging, or other local terms. What all these had in common was emphasizing the downbeat of the music by enthusiastic footwork.
Tap dancers make frequent use of syncopation. Choreographies typically start on the eighth beat, or between the eighth and the first count. Another aspect of tap dancing is improvisation. This can either be done with music and follow the beats provided or without musical accompaniment, otherwise known as a capella dancing. Hoofers are tap dancers who dance only with their legs, making a louder, more grounded sound. This kind of tap dancing, also called "rhythm tap", is typically found in cities or poor areas, but this is not always the case especially with such a wide [variety] of styles spreading throughout the world. Steve Condos rose out of his humble beginings in Pittsburgh, PA to become a master in rhythmic tap. His innovative style influenced the work of Gregory Hines, Savion Glover and Marshall Davis, Jr. The majority of hoofers, such as Sammy Davis Jr., Savion Glover, and Gregory Hines, are black dancers. Dancers like Fred Astaire provided a more ballroom look to tap dancing, while Gene Kelly used his extensive ballet training to make tap dancing incorporate all the parts of the ballet.
Common tap steps include the shuffle, flap, cramproll, buffalo, Maxie Ford, time steps, pullbacks, and wings.

Clogging has two taps on the shoe. Tapping has one tap on the shoe. I seen cloggers perform. They were more fast paced and more stylish compared to the tap danceing that I have done. I don't know if that is how is always it could of just been the teachers styles.
I asked the cloggers about the shoes and that is one of the main difference between the two types of dance. (the taps on the shoes.)

*grin* I clogged and tapped for a while...one is country and the other is not *grin* I definitely wouldn't choose clogging unless you have on a high frilly country dress and the taps that aren't connected to the shoe directly like tap shoes (I can't for the life of me remember what those things are called)...oh, and the bluegrass/country song to go with it. Anything else, just call it tap - unless you're doing a funky wagon wheel step :D.
