Loveland is the closeset (http://www.skiloveland.com/). 53 miles from Denver. It has a ski school for kids (check out the site for details).

Just a personal preference, but I would suggest driving the additional distance to Keystone or Breckenridge. No more than another 1/2 hour down the Interstate. Each of these also have many ski school options for children.

Echo Mountain is the closest, but not the fastest, to get to. The quickest to reach ski area is Loveland (right on I-70, prior to the tunnel - so about a 40 minute drive from Denver). It is also an incredible deal with diverse terrain; I think it's about $50 for a day pass and if you ski less than 4 hours, you get 1/2 your money back... something like that, check the website. The best skiing in Colorado, however, is past the tunnel typically speaking. Eldora is also quite close, about an hour drive from Denver, and is just outside of Nederland.

I'll recommend Eldora which is about 30 minutes west of Boulder. It's decent and cheaper than other places. You also may want to look into Loveland--about 90 minutes or so west of Denver right off I-70 (near the Eisenhower Tunnel). It's pretty popular and there's plenty of snow right now.

Loveland, I'm almost positive, has a ski school. I don't know about Eldora. Those are probably closest to Denver and obviously there are more farther afield which are VERY good areas--like Breckenridge (which definately has a ski school).

Have fun on the slopes with the kiddies!

Eldora sucks it's always windy there. Loveland's close but winterpark isn't much further and I like it a lot better!
