I can not accepy a family member's significant other because I do not respect him. I am constantly being accused of "... always hated him..." I have complete apathy - it is analagous to walking down a street and seeing a pile of feces - I simply side-step or walk over it. I do not stop and yell "I hate you feces" - I don't run to get a shovel to destroy it. Feces is a fact of life but it shall never be something to embrace and accept.
I can not like this person because I have no respect for him -he's a user. Is it possible to honestly like a person for whom you have no respect

Yes; you can enjoy someone's company within a narrowly defined environment and still have no respect for them. You don't have to, tho!

you respect them cause they can bring you harm,maybe you love someone you dont respect cause it makes you feel like a big man
