Well if you are just plugging in the cable ...Nothing will happen. I am not sure about your mp3 player but I have a Samsung that is like a USB flash drive and charges through the USB port as well. It does not make the sound like any other device like my other plain flash drives but the pc knows it is there ( Check- My Computer) and it starts charging as soon as I plug it in. I also have a USB powered mouse pad with leds and my pc also does not "see" it but it works fine. So you are Probably just fine

Go to control panel, click system, then hardware then device manager then scroll throu to see if the USB device shows there?
If not then it did not install correctly perhaps it was not a plug an play item?
If it does not show, if it is plug and play item all you need do is drop outa there and goto the add hardware wizzard in control panel, windows should install it for you. If it is not plug and play then you will need the installation disk the device had with it when you bought it and you will be asked by the wizzard the name of the device, then it will prompt you to insert the disk with the proper driver for it.
Then reboot and it should show up ok.

If you can hear a sound (To-Din!) that means the PC can see the MP3 player, and the most common thing is that you can see a new disk drive when you go to My PC. You should see "removable disk" or something in there

ensure that the USB port is enabled in BIOS. If it is disabled in BIOS, the PC will not detect USB. Search in google to find the steps

go to start, then my computers. click on the drop down arrow and see if you see and E drive or one called Removable disk.
If your computer is older, like a 98, it might not recognize the new technology of the mp3.
