If the sound isn't showing up in the control panel then your system might not be detecting your sound card. Do this go to start > control panel > system > hardware > device manager > look for your sound card or any device that has a ! next to it and right click and select update drivers.

If you simply lost the Volume Control from the system tray (those icons next to the time in the lower right corner), you shoud be able to get it back by going to Sounds in the Control Panel. Check your Volume tab under the Device Volume section for a check box labelled 'Place volume icon on task bar'.

Some computers, especially laptops, have a hardware button for volume control/mute. Make sure yours is set properly if it exists.

Next, go to the Start Menu, Programs, Accessories, Entertainment, then choose Volume Control (this is for XP... other operating systems still have it under Accessories somewhere).

Make sure everything is slid toward the top, and none of the mute boxes are checked.

Uncheck and then check again the option "Place the volume icon in the taskbar" in control panel>sound and audio

if the option is greyed and you cant do anything in there... that means he missconfigured the sound card driver...
So go to add remove hardware and let windows re detect it and install the drivers.
