There has been a theory based on considerable evidence that the Chinese first visited the New World in 1421. Others maintain the Vikings landed around the year 1000. But there were native peoples before the Vikings, who probably crossed in to North America thousands of years ago across the Bering Strait.
It all depends on what you mean by "discovered". If you find something and don't recognize that you found it, is that a real "discovery"?

firstly , it all depends on what you mean by 'DISCOVERED'??
do u mean people who first INHABITED america?? If yes, then those are the red indians OR native americans who have been living in america since a long time..
if u mean the person who first exposed the american continent to the known world, then it was 'Amerigo Vespucci' although most people give the credit for discovering america to 'Christopher columbus' which is incorrect..
prior to discovery of america, the world map existed only till the Atlantic ocean..i.e. the atlantic ocean was considered the end of the world.
Infact the discovery of America was an accident. The europeans wanted to find an alternative trade route to india.. Earlier, european ships used to circle africa to reach India through the sea routes.. However, as the atlantic ocean was considered the end of the world & the earth was round, it was reasoned tht if the ships went to the opposite side, they wud reach india thru the other side. However, it resulted in discovery of America when europeans tried to do so..
this happend in around 1492

The people who claim Amerigo Vespucci was the first European to reach America in the Modern age are incorrect. Vespucci did not visit S America until 7 years after Colombus. Unlike Colombus however, Vespucci realised America was a new continent. Colombus thought he had reached Asia.

There was a million Indians living here when Columbus arrived - to say he "discovered" it is ludicrous. No one person discovered it. To say it was "discovered" really implies that the Europeans were not bright enough to know there was a continent here - and racist to imply that the Indians, Mayans and Aztecs were not people. It also shows a lack of communication with the Vikings who were here.

Well, the archaeological record points to groups of immigrants coming over the land exposed between Siberia and Alaska during the last glaciation period approximately 14000 years ago. Although no names can be tacked on any of these peoples, they certainly preceeded Columbus, who was preceeded by the Norse people who landed on the east coast of Newfoundland approximately 1000 years ago.

First, the Native American Indians, second Vikings although there are theories that the Phoenicians may had arrived sometime before Christ. Next, Columbus and the Spanish and that is it as far as I know.

Mind-numbingly specific: Russians (or Asians, as what everyone else calls them), the distant relatives of those we now refer to as Indians, or Native Americans.
Specific, yet not usually the answer one was looking for: The Vikings.
World-renown answer: Christopher Columbus.

the latest is that people crossed the Bearing Straight from Russia/China and migrated down the coast and eventually populated North America.
After that the Vikings landed in what is called Canada now and went through the great lakes eventually exploring what is now Minnesota.(my relatives....go Vikings!)
