I have heard that it is for luck and money. Which one is which and where did the tradition come from?

Eating black-eyed peas is from the south. As far as the cabbage, not sure, wasn't taught that one at home. We always had black-eyed peas for New Years dinner, no matter what else was served. It is for good luck through the new year.

I didnt know about this tradition untill I moved to georgia. They are both for money, black eyed peas are for pennies, and cabbage or collards are for the green money.

Same reason you cook pork and sauerkraut with a penny or nail in it. Luck is the only reason. Probably an old wives tale.
