How does traffic start, besides in the case of an accident, construction, or other road obstruction?

If you're referring to gridlock or traffic congestion, it mostly occurs when traffic volume excess the road's normal capacity. It usually occurs in urban areas and high traffic corridors.

it starts because of too few lanes on major highway. Also majority of the people have lobs during rush hour. 8:00 to 8:30 am and no one wants to go in early and so they all leave about the same time,, causing traffic

It is caused because some idiot doesn't realize that the long, slender pedal on the (far) right makes the car go FASTER.

Maybe if cops gave tickets for going too slow, instead of speeding, we wouldn't have traffic issues.

A couple of slow cars in 2 or 3 lanes is all it can take to create a back-up.
