There is a band at the opening of your vagina and if you don't get the tampon past that point, they will hurt.

Make sure you are getting the tampon deep enough into the vagina and don't worry about losing it. The vagina is only about 5 inches long and the cervix keeps the tampon from entering the uterus.

Also, try a smaller size and work your way up to a larger size.

Usually they hurt if they are too big or you didn't follow the directions carefully. When I was a virgin no matter what I did or how I read the instructions they hurt me and were uncomfortable to use until I lost my virginity then they were easier to use and now they are normal.

Its not like your virginity has anything to do with your tampons because you have to have sex to not be a virgin a tampon can't tear your hymen but I found it hurt when I was still very tight

If you are not a virgin and they hurt have someone explain the instructions to you a little easier. That's what I did. It may sound dumb of me but before I used tampons I didn't know how and when I read the package it seemed confusing and I asked a friend how I do it and was explained about how to do it. Sometimes a girlfriend can explain things easier than a pamphlet when it comes to those things.

If you know how to use a tampon and it still hurts try a smaller size like a junior if you're a newbie or "Regulars". Having the wrong size can hurt or worse, give you TSS. Be careful!

PS: Use tampons that include an applicator. Those are the best. I use Gentle Glide. I think they are by Playtex. A plastic applicator is good. Don't worry too much about price. Health and comfort before price. I wouldn't pay more than 5 bucks for a 40 pack of playtex gentle glide tampons ever though. I get mine from Big Lots. But each Big Lots is different. Normally you can find a good deal on feminine products at any Big Lots, Wal-Mart, or Rite Aid. Those stores don't over charge.

The most common cause of discomfort when using tampons is that the tampon is not inserted deeply enough and is rubbing on the vaginal wall. Get the comfort tampons that have a nice smooth applicator. Make sure when you insert them, you push them up as far as possible; they can't get lost or get in too deeply. Look at the picture in the guide inside the package and make sure you are doing exactly what it says as far position of your fingers once you've pushed it in. Try a smaller one, like a 'light', the first few times you use one, until you're used to inserting them. Relax and don't give up!

I have to be honest with you it took me a long time to get used to them also. I tried them when I first got my period and they hurt just as you described. (You have to understand that tampons are not always best for everyone.) I couple years later I tried them again but then had a reaction to them and thought I had TSS (toxic shock symdrom) and got scared but it was the material they were made of that caused the reaction. (I would stir clear of the ones with frag. added to them...they are trouble) I used to take gymnastic when I was younger and it wasn't comfortable using pads while flipping so I just skipped going to class during this time of the month. By the eight grade I got so fed up with my period running my life I started tring different brands and found one that fits my body better. I think this is what you need to do because they all fit different. I was amazed by the difference in how they expended can effect your comfort level but it does. It might be best for you to try a slim fit tampon (Tampax makes this style) for a while until you get you to them. The one that worked best for me when I was younger was OB the ones without an applicator. I know alot of people don't like them because they don't have an applicator but they are not as long as the other tampons. (this is the only tampon that's made by a woman for a woman) You might need to insert them and remove them a couple of times until you get the hang of it. I remember I went through a box in a couple of days but learned the best way after some practice. Good Luck!

It is possible that you are inserting them incorrectly. Try the ones with an applicator and follow the instructions and diagrams very carefully. You should not be able to feel a thing. Perhaps you have an infection of some sort. You should see your doctor if it worries you. Sometimes you get dry down there even though you have your period so perhaps you could try using some ky jelly to help you insert comfortably.

Try using a smaller size. Tampons come in four different sizes, chances are you're probably using what most women commonly buy, the "regular" (they're yellow if you use Tampax). Trying going one small down to "light" (the purple ones if you're using Tampax). Tampons are going to feel a bit tight at first but once you're used to wearing them it will be natural to you. They shouldn't "hurt" if inserted correctly so make sure that you're using them appropriately. Chances are you'll feel some slight discomfort but you should be able to use them all the time.

Good luck!

Yes, try a smaller tampons and lubricate the applicator before inserting and change tampons more often. If problem persists, you can also try to apply an inner lubricant before you insert a tampon and consult your health care provider. Enjoy swimming.

i had the same problem at first. i suggest that you use a tampon with a plastic applicator. tampax pearl is the best and make sure it is a light not regular or super. that would help. also be sure you are relaxed. dont worry this isnt uncommon, i felt like i was going to faint the first time i put one in. just keep practicing.

First of all just try to relax before inserting it. Think of some nice like relaxing on a beach, enjoy the sunshine listening to the raindrop of the sky. Meditation is helpful just calm yourself before doing it. You will be surprise all the pain and hurt will not be there at all. Good luck.

Tampons should NOT be painful. Are you a virgin? Because if you are, then you still have an intact hymen and that may be what is causing you discomfort....There are different shapes of hymens and so if using a slender tampon doesn't solve your discomfort, you should make an appointment with your family physician and have them examine you. Please don't be embarassed, they are accustomed to hearing and seeing a lot more than this....your well-being is more important! Good luck!
