I have seen some bad eMachines, and I have seen good ones. Now that eMachines is owned by Gateway, they might get even better. As I see it, DELL is going downhill in quality. Their tech support has not gotten better.

Here is what I have seen FAIL with eMachines:
Power supplies (replaced for under $35, when bought from 3rd party, but this power supply is smaller than the standard ones that you can buy. I have bought replacements through NewEgg without problem).
RAM - crapped out
Hard drives - locked up. But these were the same brand drives that appear in Compaq, HP and DELL.

Yes, if you eMachine came with Windows ME, then you should EXPAND your RAM to 512MB or more, then get the Windows XP Home version, and install from SCRATCH. Reformat the drive, so it uses the NTFS file system, and you will be in good shape. Visit http://www.coastmemory.com to see what your eMachine will take.

Good luck and Happy Computing!

I have 3 emachines, all over 3 years old. Not one problem. I have had to fix friends computers many times. All gateways or dells.

Reinstalling the O/S almost always significantly improves performance. You can simulate this performance improvement by removing most 'startup' programs and from changing most 'automatic' services to 'manual'. eMachine's have a bad rap because they use cheap hardware, not because of their O/S.

Actually when you reinstall the OS it is PERFECTLY the same as when you get it brand new so reinstalling the os when you get it out of the box is a waste of time... But I LOVE my emachines
