It is impossible to compate athletes in this way. Tony Dorsett played on a very good cowboy team for a few years and put up incredible numbers in the early 80's. Emmit smith played on a team with an all pro quarterback, an all pro tight end, two all pro recievers, all pro linemen on both side of the ball, and dion sanders for a few years. Great players are ONLY as good as the players around them. Neither DOrsett or Smith did much of anything with other teams at the end of their careers and neither did a whole lot at the end of their runs in Dallas. Overall I would say Dorsett has such great speed and quickness, that defenses had to always account for him. Smith was a bit more durable and tougher between the tackles. THey were both very good but an educated football fan knows you really can't compare the two that well. Idiot fans tend to simply look at the numbers that were put up. A perfect example of being only as good as the players around you is Steve Young or Jeff Kemp in San Francisco. . . neither did much with other teams but both flourished in the 49er system and with their talent.

Any running back is only as good as his blockers.
Smith and Dorsett were both great, as was Duane
Thomas and Hershel Walker.
Point of interest: The Cowboys actually traded
for Dorsett when he was still a freshman at
Pitt. They gave up draft picks so when Tony
graduated, they would have first claim rights -
- if my memory serves correct.

Emmitt Smith is good, a high tier RB, but still very over-rated, perhaps the "worst of the best" (ie: anyone else in the top 5-10 RBs are better than him)
Guy under me, if you ever come back to look at this ---- have you hear of Barry Sanders? Jim Brown? Walter Payton?
All of them are much better than Emmitt. Emmitt has the most TDs and Yards because he played for much longer (Brown and Sanders retired in their prime) and had an excellent O-Line, and a great QB and recieving core to take pressure off him (unlike Sanders, who had neither). Eric Dickerson is hardly mentioned with the above 3 but he is also one of the best, much better than Emmitt. So is Earl Campbell. Like I said, worst of the best.
