I give to food banks and Christmas toy drives and donations to poor countries all the time. (Giving at home and internationally) But if someone is feeding me some lie on why they need money, no way! And I have heard the same 4 or 5 lies over and over enough to know they are lies. And if some telemarketer is asking for money for the poor, I know that lie too. Most of what I would give there would go to wages, not those who need it.

I've been homeless and I've been hungry and I've had to beg for money. It was a very humbling experience to have to ask total strangers for money. Some said no. Some were afraid. Some gave me $1 with disgust. Then there were the others: they would without disgust or pity, open their wallets and pull out a $5 or a $10. With their quiet eyes, they told my they'd fallen on hard times themselves in the past and were trying to repay the folks who'd been generous with them. So, now I do the same thing. I don't care what they spend it on. On the Great Wheel of Life, it's my turn to be the giver and not the asker, so I give freely.

I have in the past, but its so hard to tell if this person wants money for things that are not a benefit to him, or is in real need. I have a problem with beleiving almost all stories that someone tells me, I have compassion but in the back of my mind I am telling myself "this guy could know how to play the game and he could be scamming you".
How do you know? I never do, I try to judge what they tell me and if I am in a position where I can afford to give even if I am being taken advantage of. It's so hard to judge. I often give and pray that I have given for the right reason. If not, I will really never know and I can beleive that he indeed used the money/whatever else to make it to where he is going.
You have to have a big heart and be prepared that some of the people who act as if they need charity just play the game because it is an easy way to obtain money. Then there are the others that are simply down on their luck and their last option is to beg for help from the strangers that pass them by.
It's often a delimma for me, but more than not, I try to help in some way. What if it were me or my family that fell on hard times and exausted all other options? I think its the right thing to do, just don't expect anything in return, including positive results from your giving.

It depends, like if they see the fire department is asking for money then over half the people there will give easy, but if its just a homeless person I'm guessing about 1/16 will give if it's a good day.

i would and i have. once when i was going somewhere with my dad we passed a homeless guy and we gave him some money. i know u're not supposed to talk to strangers, i'm not an idiot. but i doubt a person would be outside, on a freezing day, by a street light, just for fun. i don't know about u, but it seems like the right thing to do.

I wouldn't. I know it sounds harsh but hear me out. By people in need of money, I'm assuming you mean homeless. I wouldn't give them money based on the fact that they've become homeless due to drugs and would use that money to buy more drugs. I don't want to supply them with something that they know is bad and probably want to quit using.

I would, but not ALL strangers. If it were a guy on the streets who was obviously a drunk or druggie or trying to scam me, I wouldn't. I would offer to buy him food.
Interestingly, when I do that, they don't want food.
But if it were a person who were obviously not scamming, then I would help however I could.

There are still lots of people around who will give a panhandler money so he can get drunk again and doesn't have to work

There have been times I had money to give, and I gladly gave it. There have been times I emptied my change purse into someone's bucket, but there are also some times when I have had nothing to give.
