That liberal guy is so funny in that he took a genuinely intelligent question and turned it into a partisan issue. Wonderful. Well anyway, it's hard to say whos in control of your thoughts. I was under the impression though that it is illegal to supplant subliminal messages in any kind of media by FCC order.

Read George Orwell's book, "1984" and see what he has to say about the "thought police". His vision was very close to what we're experiencing today with all the spin doctors, the subliminal messages, advertising and political propaganda.
It's no wonder Rush Limbaugh's 'ditto heads' can't think for themselves; our society finds it easier to believe whatever they hear without any evaluation, investigation, skepticism, doubt or pragmatic reasoning. -RKO-

If we weren't, let's put it this way... we'd be dead. Imagine if the functional impulses of the brain really did revolve around media crap. What would happen to natural instinct to eat, drink and, in all basic form, survive?
But away from the literal stuff, some folks don't have that little moral compass inside them mainly because they were raised to be stupid. One who grows up watching the T.V. sees T.V. as an important aspect.

I don't watch TV and I don't read the newspaper. I rarely listen to the radio. I ignore negativity. Do I really control my own thoughts? Sometimes. The rest of the time I do the smart thing and I leave God in charge.

the environment we live in effects our thinking. period. Our brains our definitely manipulated with advertising, media and marketing, otherwise, why would they do it? However one point that is good to understand, our natural tenancies affect our perception of marketing, in other words, if you are a vegetarian, a commercial for Outback Steakhouse is not going to appeal to you. It begins with you and your likes and dislikes. Marketing cannot make you like something that you actually do not.

Our minds are like monkeys swinging from one branch to another. Try not to have a single thought for just one minute and you can understand what I mean. With this in mind, we are easily manipulated by all those things you mentioned.
