Every year that I go to the doctor my thyroid is swollen but my doctor never does a blood test. He keeps telling me that it not severe enough to be tested because it's not enlarged enough. I am 5'3" and around 140-145 lbs depending on the time of month. It doesn't matter what I eat or how much I eat I still stay the same weight. If I diet I can loose some but when I say diet I mean major major dieting. I have alot of the side effects of it like...fatigue, weight gain and trouble lossing weight, chilliness, low tolorance to cold, dry skin, I don't have the constipation but do experience a slow digestive tract, I'm also not depressed but it's not fun being tired all the time, I have heard of people taking nature supplements to help since they are not bad enough for medicine. I have did some research on the internet but I'm just as confessed as when I first started. I was wondering if anyone has heard or tried anything that works. Please let me know I would be really thankful.

I am an R.N. and also had a thyroidectomy 30 yrs ago. I totally disagree with your doctor. It should be checked. The blood test ( a TSH) is quick, and simple. If he still declines to do one, I would visit a different doctor.

You definitely need to see another doctor. A specialist- Endocrinologist- if your thyroid gland is swollen you might possibly have a goiter{tumor). You already show symptoms of underactive thyroid. Forget the supplements you can get over the counter. You need to confirm the diagnosis by blood tests and then the doctor will probably prescribe synthroid- hormone supplement. Some people need to take these for the rest of your life. You'll be surprised how much better you will feel.

Here's what has worked for me:

(1) I do the 7 Steps of Radiant Recovery dot com.
(2) I get blood tests 2 or 3 times per year. They are TSH, Free T3 and Free T4.
(3) I take a small dose of Armour Thyroid daily on an empty stomach, before I get up in the morning.
(4) I take L-Tyrosine (500 mg) daily, on an empty stomach.
(5) I take 200 mcg of Selenium daily.
(6) I take a walk daily (20-60 minutes). I might take a second walk every now and then.

That's it. That works for me.

My thyroid isn't enlarged and doctors do thyroid checks anyway as a point of principle, because I struggle with weight. Get a second opinion. The simple blood test is commonly done.

Best Wishes,

Sue

E V left one thing off her list: an iodine supplement.

Like a seaweed.

Like dulse or kelp.

I take 4 drops of Bernard Jensen's LiquiDulse each morning in the glass of water that I take my thyroid pills with.

Simple and cheap (I Googled the product and purchased it online.)

Your weight is perfect.. But your dr is an idiot and should be taking blood tests and have you on thyroid meds.

Get an appointment with an Endocrinologist..
