Where I work, they only have intranet -- so only work related sites only.
I heard of people surfing the net while at work.
Does your boss let you do it?
What's your occupation and why do you need internet access.
How can you get any work done?
If you have free time to do it, how much free time do you have to do it?

as far as work concerns,i allow all my staff desktop computers to access internet everyday,at times let them play games to release their tensions of work.i m a very open-minded person as long as my company is making money.of course my staff should complete his work first before going into net, this's the basic rule.i m doing "import n export" business n i need lots of bookings,so browsing net is very helpful n important as well.only 3-4 hours if i've my free time.

best wishes.

Where I used to work (vocational school), they let me use the Internet. I used to order supplies for the company so I had to surf the net to find products. They set up the Internet for the students to use for their leisure time so the whole place worked the same way. Most sites were blocked so you couldn't look up everything. It really depends on where you work. How I got my work done was simple: if I get my work done now, I can play on the internet later. The only reason I played on the internet was because I had nothing to do and it was the only way to past time.

But if you find yourself playing more than working, make yourself that deal: work now, play later. Some work places can keep track of what you're doing online so be careful what you look at and when. I was afraid to get caught if I was on there more than working so I limited my time on there. Good luck!

I work for a major bank and I have internet access at work. I use it for both personal and work use quite often. Sometimes I have to do industry research quickly or find information on a company. When I don't have much to do, I read probably 5 or 6 newspapers (online) a day plus other personal stuff. My boss doesn't say anything as long as the work gets done. Plus if there's nothing else to do, then what else are you supposed to do? My whole job is on the computer.

Very few companies have the internet for the purpose of recreation and most employees can be fired as it is considered theft of company time > surfing when you are supposed to be working. There is much information on the net that is work related . . . we had to order many parts and get service information from vendors who have websites now. IT departments are tracking peoples surfing and can tell when they are on an unauthorized site which can result in disciplinary action.
