If a baby's temperature is 100.4 degrees F or higher, make sure he/she is not dressed too warmly or over bundled with blankets. Crying may also raise a baby's temperature. Retake the baby's temperature again in about 30 minutes. If the temperature is still high, call your baby's physician immediately.

Hospital A&E if not?

A temp of 101.4 IS NOT a high temp in an 11 month old. Call your PCP(primary care physicain) with they symptoms to see if anything is going around, or talk to a nurse. I work at a medical answering service, please dont just rush to ER, unless he/she is having other serious symptoms. It's christmas, they are too busy as it is! It truely depends on the other symptoms. You NEED to talk to a nurse or doctor on this one!
A temp of 103 and under isnt urgent, so long as there are no other urgent symptoms.

don't let these answers scare you - 101.4 is not an extremely high fever at all. Give the baby some infant's tylenol and go by behavior more than temperature. A 101 temperature with a baby who is hard to wake and extremely lethargic is much worse than a 103 fever baby who is acting normally.

Here's a great article with tons of information about fevers in children.

My grandson's doctor recommended Motrin and it worked. Well, in conjuction with grandma giving the little one several lukewarm baths. (Not cold baths, that shocks their little system).

101.4 is miserable, but it is far from life threatening. I wouldn't be running off to the ER yet, unless you have great medical insurance and 3 hours of spare time.

Push the fluids--that is really important. Remember to watch the temperature at night. It is normal for the temp to rise at night.

If you are in doubt, almost all hospitals have a "Ask a Nurse" hotline number.

Hopefully you didn't wait for people to answer here before taking action.

I would first call your doctor. Then, you can give him/her some Tylenol (Infant's type). It is safe. Just read the label. 101.4 isn't TOO high, although anytime your child has a fever it is scary.

If it persists, give him/her a tepid bath. (just about room temperature)

Good luck and I hope the fever comes down.

All you have to do is take the baby to the emrgsty and they will take it from there or give the baby some infant tynale see if there teething because a 101.4 is kind of dangerous.

infants and toddlers can handle higher temperatures than we can.
Your baby probably has a faver because his body is try to fight off a virus or infection.
Try giving him tylenol or ibuprofen to calm down the fever. Also a warmish cool bath may help and a cool wash cloth on his head.
After the bath let him wear only the diaper around the house.
feel free to contact me if you need any more advice. I hope I am some help.
good luck
Call the doctor if nothing helps.

ok some of these people are overreacting. i just wonder if they hav children. i have never taken my son to the hospital for a fever and he is now 5. what you want to do is make sure he is NOT dress warmly. warmth only makes the fever go up. the baby might act like its cold, but that is ok, if you want to, put a LIGHT blanky on the baby. you also can give the baby a lukewarm bath to help try to break the fever. the fever will fluctuate throughtout the night. just keep on eye on it. i think it if get to 102 or 103, but i think 102, you want to take the baby to the ER. also you can go to WEBMD.com to find what tempture to take the baby in and it will also give you more help.

sponge bathe the baby all over with cool water NOT COLD...give the baby the correct dose of tylenol...see if the temp goes down...if not go to the ER.....if the baby is acting normal afterwards, you can prob wait till the AM to go to the DR. Meningitis is the main concern,,,if your baby has it, it can kill in a short period of time. A baby with a fever must be seen by a dr in short order.

What other symptoms does he/she have? The fever could be from cutting a tooth, an ear infection, sinus infection, flu, cold... all sorts of things. Is the baby vomiting? Have a runny nose? Pulling at the ears? Crying a lot? Coughing? Drooling (teething or sore throat)? Eating normally or not eating? Diarrhea or normal stools?

You can cool the baby down with cool washcloths on the face, back of neck, under the armpits, or between the legs.
