At the moment it would have to be the New Zealand Allblacks but tim e can change. Australia has been playing poorely over the last season and they are normally the best,
further down the list there are alot of the european teams that are quite decent for example wales, england and Ireland

Although as a Scot, it pains me to say it - you could argue that the greatest rugby team in the world are the reigning world champions. In this case one would have to concede that England are currently the greatest team in the world.
One look at the IRB world rankings and you can clearly see that this is no longer the case : http://www.irb.com/en/World+Rankings/world+rankings+full.htm
Given that the IRB is the international governing body of the sport I think it's fair to say that the New Zealand All Blacks are currently the greatest rugby union team in the world.
Over the course of history this is also the case - the All Blacks have a higher success rate in rugby than the Brazil football team do in football - some will say that is voided by the fact that they have only won one world cup and that was back in '87 but 20 years on, they're looking in good shape to pick up their second in Autumn 2007.

Historically, the greatest rugby teams in the world have been the Australian Wallabies, New Zealand All Blacks, and South Africa Springboks.
Which is the better is largely a matter of the times.
For all of rugby from 1900 to the present day, the answer is unquestionably the All Blacks. They have the legend, the mystique, and the Haka.
Even as a Wallaby fan, I can admit that.
KA MATE!
