I am eligible for a new phone through the New Every Two program from Verizon. If I order it through the website, do I have to activate it when I receive it? I don't want to activate it right now, I want to use it for a backup. But I don't want to get it, if I have to activate it.

If you order a phone under your New Every Two and fail to activate within 30 days of receipt, Verizon Wireless can charge you retail price for the phone. When you upgrade, you need to sign up for another 2 yr contract to be eligible for another New Every Two upgrade, or else you're de-enrolled.

If you enrolled under New Every Two after a certain date, you have to take advantage of the offer within 6 mos of passing the two year mark. Which means, I suppose, if you let the window pass, the next time you want an upgrade, there's no New Every Two credit to use up, meaning you'll have to pay retail for the phone if you choose not to sign a two-year agreement.

I guess it's up to you. If it were me, see if your employer has a corporate discount program w/ VZW and see which phones are available for under $100 w/ a two year agreement and apply your New Every Two credit to that. Thus, your upgrade will cost another 2-yr contract and a shot at another New Every Two upgrade in two years. And enjoy the new phone for nothing.

I had verizon several years ago. Every two year program means that a person is eligible for a upgrade on their phone after their two year contract is over. However once a person upgrades a phone they are required to activate their phone and agree to a renewal of a new contract either a 1 or 2 year. This is where the most people don't realize that yes they have to activate that new phone plus agree to a new contract.
