Cleaning under the stove top, I noticed a white like powder around the pilot lights, what is this? And what causes it?

The white stuff is calcium build up. It is a normal by product of moisture. When ever you burn natural gas or propane there is a little moisture that is released as well.
In High efficiency furnaces there has to be a drain line hooked to it to let all the moisture escape and go down the drain.

Yes, I have an old crappy gas stove and when I called the gas company so someone could come show me how to re-light my pilot light, the repairman said that white buildup is normal. It's just something old crappy gas stoves like to do. It's not harmful and I guess you can wipe it off. Apparently newer, more efficient stoves aren't supposed to have that problem.

Sounds like your pilot light is adjusted too high. The mixture is too rich, not burning properly and is causing a white soot to build up. Sometimes the gas company can come out and make adjustments for you at no charge.

Pilot light adjusted too high, but can cause headaches, nausea, dizziness and heart palpitations. This is not a safe condition in your home and should not be discounted.

Probably a little corrosion, deposits, aluminum does this, nothing much to worry about. It you clean it be careful, they are a little delicate when they have been on for a while and of course don't burn yourself or anything.

i agree with the first guy, and be careful not to get the powdwer into the pilot, it can clog and stop working.

Probably just some previous tenants cooking meth. Nothing to worry about.
