Some people are just miserable and are constantly looking for a target and now you're it for him.

I've dealt with the same thing with co-workers. Just be professional and polite and nothing can come of this; no one can make you be friends with anyone at work if you're professional and polite.

I actually had a collegue complain to the HR Director that I turned down his invitation to lunch and that I didn't discuss my weekends with him but he's heard me having the conversation with others. She reminded him that we're not friends and to keep the relationship professional. Sad.

There are lots of ways to deal with this. It is helpful to know that its just a test (of life) that calls you to practice taking responsibility for your own response regardless of others' actions. To be proactive versus reactive as Steven Covey says in the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People.

I can recommend a few books that have helped me with this dilemma.

7 Habits of Highly Effective People - Covey
Aikido In Everyday Life - Dobson
Celestine Prophecy: Experiential Guide (Section on Control Dramas) - Redfield & Adrienne

An additional note: for some people work is about relationships and they don't understand people for whom work is not, which seems to be your position. For those that do not understand you, you have to dcide if you want to or can get them to understand your position and if you don't be a bit tolerant of their response while you learn how to find a compromise with them ( in the work environment).

Good luck and feel free to contact me if you want to talk about specific strategies for coping.

Sounds like for shock value. He's looking for a response/wants to see your reaction. Some people are weird and must insist that everyone likes them and goes out of their way to talk to them..fill them in about your life..etc..etc.. and you appear to be quiet and focused while at work and you are obviously "stumping" your co-worker :)

I am very quiet, focused while at work and like you I am not at work to meet friends. I have fellow co workers who need to talk to George Foreman because their "all up in my grill" LOL Very Annoying .. Tell your Boss if it bothers you that your co worker is harassing you. Ignore the jackass and go about your business! You are an asset to your company!

Best of LUCK~!

He's just trying to get you upset so you do or say something stupid. That will make him look better in the eyes of his boss.

Could be bent because you haven't spoken to him and he thinks he's god's gift or something?
