I just had a talk with my mom and she was saying that if i became independent, i could do whatever i wanted. my brother is able to do what he wants because he lives with our grandparents and he buys all his own stuff. my mom just got my sister and i a new apartment, pays all our bills, our cell phone bill, and just got me a 2006 impala. i am willing to give this all up so i can do what i want to do. i don't like the way she bosses us around and tells us what to do. if i do give all this up, i will have to get a job, pay for my own college, and pay my own bills. I was thinking about getting a job, saving for a car and staying with my grandparents(they really wouldn't mind), and going to a college that is cheaper than the one i go to now. tuition now is 20,000 and i have most of it in scholarship money and the schools i want to go to are only 6000. is this a good idea? what more would i have to do. does anyone have any advice for me.

Wow. You are very furtunate to have a mother who is as financially stable as yours. She has a good point though but life is really tuff, you know. My mother is poor and she makes us pay rent. I have to work and go to school and its not fun. My grades are hurt by this and its actually hurting my financial aid. I cant get a scholarship because my grades are so low. So if you can get good grades and juggle a job that pays well than do it. But do the math first. Can you really afford rent, car, bills, food and go to school. I would love to have your mom. I would sacrifice freedom for a couple of years and take advantage of the opportunities you have. After school, then i would stop relying on my mother.
But you are not alone. Lots of kids (grown kids)are in your shoes, and they are constantly getting threatened to do good and be home at a certain time. All because they dont want to be poor and face the real world.
Goodluck and i wish i was you.

It is possible. It takes a lot of adjusting. I grew up not having to budget time or money. I didn't really have a job through high school and my parents paid for everything. I moved off to college and came out as transsexual and lesbian and all of a sudden the money stopped coming in. It's a big change. The best advice I can give you is do what you think is best for you. It's tougher, but the reward is great.

I would suggest you get a job (maybe part-time) first so you have experience in finding out how fast money goes after you earn it. Paying one's own bills and being responsible is a good thing if you are ready for it and don't keep thinking "i can just ask mom for help if this doesn't work."

I think parents usually have their kids' best interests at heart. I'd think twice before giving that up! I had to pay my own way the whole way through college, and it was super-tough. If you can find a way to get along with your mom, you'd definitely have more a head start than most people.

First off, what is so horrible about doing as your mother asks? Is she looking out for your best interests or interfering? Then, do your grandparents have room, and at their age, are you sure its no burden? And, what can you do at your grand-parents that your mother WON'T LET YOU DO?

I mean, wow! You must have some rockin' grandparents!

yeah it seems like you have everything very well planned and I think that is better to start doing everything on your own now than later on because your mom is not always gonna be around and
Good Luck I think that you can do it
