Many of these answers are correct...except for Geek49203, of course! I was a very effective classroom teacher (instrumental and vocal music) for 18 years before getting my counseling masters degree. I did not go for the degree due to burn out in the classroom, either. I loved teaching, but had a desire to help the students in a more personal manner.

To be an effective counselor you would be most effective after teaching a couple of years at least. You DO need a masters degree also.

You should check with the school system you are trying to work for in order to see what their requirements are to be a high school counselors. Typically school counselors have at least a masters in pyschology, social work, or school counseling and have to pass state exams to be licensed. You could try a career in journalism with your English degree or teaching continuing education courses at a local community college or you can try to teach regular english classes at a community college.

Definitely not in Canada. Counselors normally have an undergraduate degree, teaching certification, teaching experience and a Master's degree in Educational Counseling.

Here in the USA, the standard vary by location since the Feds haven't mandated any credentials.

The counselors that I've seen are teachers that were tenured in, but then either didn't enjoy the class room or were ineffective in the class room. In any event, the counselors that I encountered were simply class scheduling admins, who usually had precious little ideas on how to help a student (or the resources to help if they did have a clue).

It really depends on what state you live in; you need to check with the educational guidelines the state has set forth. Some states may require you to major in school psychology, others may not.

You have to your Masters in a psychology program, ie - Behavioral Science. And then you have to take additional hours for your license.
