the only way i know how is to choose a photo folder to sync from and all my photos are in the ipod. what i do is, if the pic is too big, i shrink them using the paint program. maybe that's that problem it's too big.

for photos, set up a sub-folder of your favorite photos in the photos section of your documents and title it, so you know which folder it is.
then you gotta connect your iPod to the computer or laptop or mac pc or notebook. if it doesn't automatically do, you have to wait for the ipod to sync itself; when it says iPod complete, also if you have the latest version of the iTunes (( which you can also get at the link i gave you )) you'll see at the main screen when your ipod is connected you see a summary of your iPod. you see the tabs title: summary, music, podcasts, etc? click on 'photos' choose the folder you want to sync from. make sure the 'all photos' option is chosen. and that's it.
it's easier to shrink the photos too because the photos also take up space in the ipod.
to shrink it, you have to open the photo with the paint program. once opened, press ctrl + W and a pop up window will come up. this is how you shrink or expand the picture. there isnt really a constant number you type in to shrink the photo to your desired size, you have to play with it. make sure you put the numbers in 'shrink' portion of the pop up window. if you make it more that 100% it'll get bigger. under 100% the pic will shrink and shrink until you want the size. if you put 50% obviously that's half the size. you gotta play with the numbers.
