Also could I format a HD for win xp and mac os 10x

I don't think you can run XP and OS 10x at the same time on that hard drive, unless you have an Apple PC and the Boot Camp software that Apple gives you. Even doing so, apparently XP runs slower than it normally would.
You can encrypt the hard drive with software like Truecrypt, although it creates an encrypted partition on the hard drive, but does not encrypt the hard drive itself. Still, it's a great program as long as you don't forget the password to the archive. The encryption is very strong and should fulfill your needs.

Be very carefull using 'full drive' encryption - anything goes wrong and you will never see your files again.
